The Australian transport sector accounted for around 80 million tonnes of Australia's total net greenhouse gas emissions in 2004, representing 14 per cent of Australia's total emissions. About 89 per cent of these emissions came from road transport, including cars, trucks and buses.
Greenhouse gas emissions from the transport sector are growing substantially, rising by 28 per cent between 1990 and 2004. Latest projections indicate that emissions from the transport sector will rise by 40 per cent between 1990 and 2010.
The transport sector is one of the fastest growing emissions sectors in Australia and as such provides significant opportunities for greenhouse gas abatement. The Australian Government is seeking to reduce emissions in this sector through:
- informing consumer choices
- working with industry to improve vehicle efficiency
- exploring and developing the use of alternative fuels where there is a greenhouse benefit.
